| Newswise — Something as simple as a sneeze could be the last straw that causes the pain and deformity of a vertebral compression fracture (VCF), a common complication of osteoporosis. Standard care calls for pain medications, bed rest and back rest. Minimally invasive kyphoplasty has been performed more than 115,000 times worldwide. It involves insertion of a tube into the spine, through which a small balloon is inflated to restore the height of the broken bone. Bone cement forms an internal cast to fix the bone in place. UAB's Multidisciplinary Spine Care Network is the only site for the first comparison study of kyphoplasty versus the standard care approach. UAB physiatrist Laura Kezar, M.D., study principal investigator, said, "This comparative study may change the standard of care for osteoporotic patients in the U.S." | ||
