The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting the public that contaminated Ziyad brand Tahini and Ghandour Tahina Extra Sesame Butter may still be on the market despite a recall of these products in April, 2005.   FDA is concerned that Ziyad Brothers Importing of Cicero , Ill., which distributed both of these products, has not been as effective as possible in withdrawing the products from the market.

FDA monitoring of the recall indicates that the company did not provide sufficient notice of the recall and all the products that are affected by it to all of its retail and other customers.    FDA has issued a written notice of these findings to the company along with formal instructions on how the recall can be effectively completed.

These products may be contaminated with Salmonella senftenberg, Salmonella cubana, or Salmonella idikan, organisms which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as blood vessel infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis (infection of the lining of the heart) and septic arthritis (infection of the joint space).

Recalled product includes:   Ziyad brand Tahini sold in 16oz., 32oz. and 64oz., glass jars, and 128 oz. plastic jars, as well as 16 oz. and 32 oz. plastic jars and 40 pound plastic containers labeled "Tahina Extra Sesame Butter, 100% Crushed Sesame Seeds, Made in Lebanon, Packed by A.O. Ghandour Sons S.A.L., Distributed by Ziyad Brothers Importing."   There are no lot numbers on the recalled containers.

FDA is continuing its investigation into the problem and will work to ensure that all contaminated product is removed from the market.

Consumers who have purchased any of these contaminated foods should not consume it, but should dispose of it or return it to the store of purchase.  Anyone who has consumed the affected foods and who is experiencing any of the symptoms noted above or any other symptoms should consult their healthcare provider immediately.    Retailers should discontinue selling the 40 lb. plastic containers or any other size containers.   Consumers with questions may contact the firm's Recall Coordinator, Sonia Ziyad, at info@ziyad.com or at 708-222-8330.
